Since 2017 the Peter Watson medal is delivered to the candidate with the best overall score in the FEBOS – glaucoma exam.
The Peter Watson medal was established by joint proposal of the EBO and EGS in 2017 as a tribute to Peter Watson’s great achievements in the field of glaucoma. Among other immense contributions Peter Watson together with the late John Cairns has revolutionized the treatment of glaucoma by developing the trabeculectomy in 1968. Glaucoma is still the leading cause of irreversible blindness in the world and trabeculectomy has had a huge effect in reducing the burden of blindness from this disease.
