Mission & Duties

Vision: To cultivate an eye and vision care environment where high-quality lifelong learning serves as the foundation of medical professionals’ accountability to society. We are committed to ensuring that continuing education and professional development (CE/PD) remain firmly rooted in this essential principle.

Values:
We honor the longstanding trust between eye and vision care professionals and society, grounded in internationally recognized best practices. This trust is fundamental for advancing the
medical profession to effectively meet patients’ needs and align with public expectations. We respect the contextual eye care needs shaped by national, regional, generational, and cultural diversity across Europe with the necessary adaptions to meet varied communities’ contexts and needs.

Mission:
In close collaboration with the European Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (EACCME*), we work to ensure the design of CE/PD programs and systems aligns with internationally recognized best practices in medical education. We promote competency-based education, advocate for equitable access to learning, embrace education that addresses patients’ specific eye care needs, and meet public expectations.

Committed to building upon the significant work of our predecessors, we aspire to:

  • Cultivate leadership in CE/PD by fostering a culture of professional excellence stemming from the profession, rather than being imposed externally. By promoting high standards and ensuring accountability, we can empower physicians and eyecare teams to achieve fulfillment while demonstrating a strong commitment to societal responsibility.
  • Promote high standards of education by promulgating the main concepts, processes, and good practices in the CE/PD of physicians and eyecare teams.
  • Support CE/PD articulated with clear needs assessment and learning outcomes, adequate strategies for education, implementation, assessment, and evaluation.
  • Promote the value of demonstrating professional advancements through developing personal learning plans utilizing effective, ready-to-use online platforms.
  • Recognize high-quality learning experiences across the broader educational spectrum, particularly in enduring materials and online education, as components in advancing CE/PD
  • Advance scholarship in continuing education and professional development by nurturing robust research. This research will inform the creation and refinement of educational programs and systems while also exploring the intersection between research and practice.
  • Nurture engaging and innovative educational approaches that enhance the effectiveness of CE/PD
  • Ensure quality CE/PD programs and systems by seeking to link education with quality improvement and maintenance of public health.
  • Ensure unbiased education while fostering a transparent and constructive relationship with partners.
  • Promote the importance of ongoing education and professional development in health systems, highlighting its value at the micro, meso, and macro levels
