NEW: Symposium on importance of protection of time for teaching at EVER in Crete

EBO has organised a symposium under the umbrella of Concordia with collaboration of SOE, EUPO and EVER on importance to protect the time for teaching in the times of increasing demands for service based hospital administrations.

In order that the information on this important matter would reach even more readers, the talks of all the speakers were kindly provided and are attached below.

See the programme below and the talks:

CONCORDIA: How to protect time for teaching
Recent concerns on suppressing time allocated for education at teaching institutions have become widespread. Increasing demands to increase service by the health managements often come at expense of teaching and research activities that should be a mission statement of any EU teaching center.

This does have negative implications for both medical or surgical training. Many programme directors expressed a wish that EBO would help them in establishing »protected time and number of teaching sessions«, allowing international support to their efforts to keep the necessary organisational scheme for teaching purposes (e.g. number of patients in the clinic, or operations, if teaching). EBO could produce a set of recommendations that could be either sent directly to the decision-making bodies, or downloaded and used in support by the national delegates themselves.

I extend a heart-felt thank you to all that have participated or supported (as examiners or national delegates) this year’s EBO examination.  Special thanks need to be addressed to to Catherine Creuzot-Garcher, chairman of Education committee, Danny Mathysen for statistical analysis and Dara Conlon for organisational efforts.  EBO is grateful to SFO that offered superb hospitality to EBO, in addition to the premises, granting free access to the SFO congress to both, candidates and professors.  EBO is also grateful to company Thea for their thoughtful contribution in social events.

As acceptance of EBO exam is constantly increasing and becomes European benchmark of knowledge in ophthalmology, it would be of interest to both EBO and the candidates if EBO examination could be, at least in part, acknowledged as national knowledge examination in participating countries.
